Partnership-funded Professional Development Programs

Partnership-funded programs are making science-centered schools a reality! Elementary schools across the state are finding ways to make science a core part of their curriculum. Teachers and principals from 15 schools representing 10 mid-sized districts are participating in the FOSS Leadership Academy, a collaboration among the K-12 Alliance, Lawrence Hall of Science and Delta Publishers.

The FOSS Leadership Academy is a unique 3-year opportunity to develop school-based leaders (teachers and principals) who can sustain the implementation of the FOSS California K-5 science program. Academy participants
  • Increase their understanding of FOSS instructional design, scientific inquiry, and use of formative assessment and science notebooks.
  • Increase their knowledge of leadership including change theory, working with adults, and creating professional learning communities.
  • Build advocacy for science education as a core part of the elementary curriculum
District and schools participating in the Academy are: Cambrian Unified School District, Coachella Unified School District (Ceasar Chavez School, Westside Elementary, Mountain Vista Elementary), Conejo Valley Unified School District (Earths Magnet), Garvey Elementary School District (Bitely Elementary), Montebello Unified School District (Bell Gardens Elementary School), Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (Rio Vista Elementary), Stockton Unified School District (Rio Calaveras Elementary and Pittman Elementary San Juan Unified School District (Del Paso Manor School, Orangevale School, Carmichael School), Whittier School District (Phelan School, Sorenson School).
