- The K-12 Alliance unites three professional development networks--CSIN, SPAN and SS&C--to
provide regional services that include standards-based content (science and mathematics),
instructional strategies (including technology and literacy) and development of teacher
leadership. The three networks have received base funding from a variety of sources
including the National Science Foundation (NSF), California Department of Education
Eisenhower Funds, U.S. Department of Education and local school fees.
- CSIN, SPAN AND SS&C have received national recognition. CSIN is cited in designing
professional development for mathematics and science teachers and in
the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse's "Ideas that Work,
Science Professional Development." SPAN
was recognized as only one of five middle school science programs nationally as a
"results-based" professional development program by the
National Staff Development Council.
- Over the course of their history, CSIN, SPAN and SS&C have had a major impact on

- K-12 Alliance staff and teacher leaders have contributed to setting statewide
policy through their work with the Science Framework, instructional materials review,
science assessments, Program Quality Review, Western Association of Schools and Colleges,
and local, state and national science standards.
- K-12 Alliance staff and teacher leaders actively contribute to professional
organizations such as: The California Science Education Advisory Committee (CSEAC);
California Schools Leadership Academy (CSLA); California Science Teachers' Association
(CSTA); National Science Teachers Association (NSTA); National Staff Development Council
(NSDC); California Mathematics Council (CMC); Computer Using Educators (CUE) and the
Regional 1882 Consortium.
- K-12 Alliance staff and teacher leaders have been recognized for their contributions
to science education as district Teachers of the Year, National Presidential Awardees in
elementary and secondary teaching, and CSTA's Distinguished Service Awards.
- The K-12 Alliance has forged a variety of partnerships including: county offices of
education; California Department of Education; WestEd; California Science Teachers
Association; California Science Project; NSF-funded Urban and Local Systemic Initiatives;
institutes of higher education; Hewlett-Packard Corporation; Integrated Waste Management;
Sandia National Laboratory; Lawrence Hall of Science; American Petroleum Institute;
Eisenhower Regional Consortium; and the Southern California Earthquake Center.
